Job Summary:

This individual is responsible for all aspects of optical dispensary operations.

Education and Experience:

  1. Licensed optician.
  2. Three years’ experience in dispensary operations.
  3. Working knowledge of inventory management, eyewear sales, and basic financial management.
  4. Familiar with managed vision care contracting.

Essential Skills and Abilities:

  1. Maintain all required state licensures.
  2. Demonstration of appropriate team player attitude and enthusiasm.
  3. Possesses a wide-ranging fund of knowledge applicable to optometric care and current trends in eyewear.
  4. Extensive experience and understanding of all aspects related to operations of a modern optical dispensary.

Responsibilities:

  • Measure patients’ bridge and eye size, temple length, vertex distance, pupillary distance and optical centers of eye, using measuring devices.
  • Evaluate prescriptions in conjunction with patients’ vocation and avocational visual requirements. Recommend specific lenses, lens coatings and frames to suit client needs. Ensure patients are properly educated regarding their vision prescription and available options.
  • Assist patients in selecting frames according to style and color and ensure that frames are coordinated with facial and eye measurements as well as optical prescriptions.
  • Sell goods such as contact lenses, spectacles, sunglasses and other goods related to eyes.
  • Heat, shape or bend plastic or metal frames to adjust and repair eyeglasses to fit clients using pliers and hands.
  • Show customers how to insert, remove and care for their contact lenses and eyeglasses.
  • Determine patients’ current lens prescriptions using lensometers or lens analyzers and patients’ eyeglasses.
  • Maintain emphasis on profitable operations while satisfying patient needs. Constantly assess financial performance and institute appropriate enhancements in consultation with the doctor.
  • Work with manager and doctors to ensure comprehensive completion of all operational tasks.
  • Perform administrative duties such as tracking inventory and sales, submitting patient insurance information, maintaining patient records, collecting patient payments and submitting work orders.
  • Arrange, maintain and clean optical displays.
  • Ensure that all dispensary-related objectives are met.
  • Work with area labs, frame reps and contact lens vendors to negotiate pricing and servicing.

Ophthalmic Technician

Job Summary:

To perform an extensive number of data collection functions as delegated by the physician to allow for proper professional diagnosis of patients and to do so in a way that instills patient confidence in the treatment. Demonstrate ophthalmic technician skills. Benefits available.

Education and Experience:

  1. High school diploma and some college.
  2. Experience as an ophthalmic technician.

Responsibilities:

1. Communication & Patient Care

  • Support all physicians and optometrists in the practice with patient care.
  • Acquaint all new patients with the office procedures and additional charges to which they will be exposed.
  • Inform patients of the purpose of all tests personally performed and how they will be affected during the tests.
  • Obtain patient history to include chief compliant, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications.
  • Perform accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks to include: A-scans, visual fields, OCT, pachymetry, corneal topography, and Goldman fields.
  • Perform fundus photography when technology becomes available within the practice.
  • Perform contact lens exams, fittings and teachings.
  • Code visits with reasonable accuracy, notifying patients and doctors if referral is needed to perform testing, etc. in order to ensure proper billing.
  • Act as a scribe, when necessary.
  • Train towards performing retinoscopy with proficiency in adult and cyclopleged children and measurements; as well as measurements with prism of tropias and phorias.
  • Work on pace, ensuring patients receive a quality exam while maintaining the integrity of the scheduled exam times.

2. Triage

  • Determine which patient should be next to be taken from the waiting room and to have testing initiated. Escort all patients from the waiting room for the data collection. Following testing, advise the patient as to who will see them next and make them comfortable during the wait.
  • Maintain a smooth flow of patients to the physician, altering the test sequence as required.
  • Communicate with ophthalmic assistant to facilitate proper patient flow.

3. Administrative

  • Check calibration of equipment and make adjustments or calls for service, as necessary.
  • Order and maintain proper inventory of all patient care supplies (bulbs, film, visual field paper, ARK paper, etc.).
  • Assist Kelly with Patient Assistance Program, when needed.
  • Call in or write out medication and glasses prescriptions as needed.
  • Assist front office in confirming upcoming appointments.
  • Assist front office in pulling and filing patient charts as well as preparing charts.
  • Close all rooms and equipment at the end of the day.
  • Ensure lobby is clean and organized and trash is taken out on daily, with the exception of housekeeping days.
  • Any additional tasks as assigned.

Ophthalmic Scribe

Griffey Eye Care & Laser Center has an opening for a full-time Ophthalmic Scribe in its busy Chesapeake office.

Experience is required. MDOffice or comparable EMR experience preferred. Must be highly organized, able to keep up a fast pace and maintain an enthusiastic attitude. Benefits available.

Responsibilities:

  • Answer phone calls.
  • Call patients when glasses and contact lenses are ready for pick up.
  • Order contact lenses and supplies for Optical Department.
  • Teach patients insertion and removal techniques for new contact lens patients.
  • Dispense contact lenses.
  • Pull insurance authorizations.
